Five things to do before selling your home this spring

10 minute read.

With the winter gloom starting to make way to the warmer and sunnier spring season, here are a few ways that you can prepare your home to go onto the market during the busiest house selling season.

1 . First impressions count

Potential buyers typically make a judgement of whether or not they would buy a house within the first few seconds of arriving. The most important thing you do is be sure to make a good first impression with kerb appeal, front gardens and drive ways.

In particular- give your front door a little attention. While it’s not always financially possible to buy a new better front door, there are other ways to spruce it up. Replace any worn door handles, give it a new lick of paint and add a wreath or decorative number plate. Anything that helps your home stick in the buyers mind in a positive way will help you sell your house.

2 . Have a spring clean

Spring cleaning has it’s name for a reason! Most people will clear out the house and give it a good clean once the weather starts to get warmer, and this is even more important when putting your house on the market.

Potential buyers want something that looks fresh and clean, and not something that looks like they’ll have to put extra effort into after they move. Give old carpets or flooring a deep clean and wash your curtains. Remember to dust the skirting boards and above cupboards. You’ll be surprised how of a difference a good dust can make.

You can also plug in some air-fresheners and light candles to get rid of any lingering pet smells.

3 . Let the natural light in

A dark gloomy room is an immediate turn off for potential buyers. If the room has a window open the curtains and remove objects from the window ledge to let in as much natural light as possible.

Natural light will brighten up every room and make your house look beautiful and cosy.

4 . Keep decorations minimal

While you may be tempted to decorate your home to attract buyers, remember that not everyone has the same taste. Try and keep decorations to the absolute minimum, and where they are needed keep them neutral colours and out of the way. This will help buyers imagine the house in their own style, and not feel like they’re intruding into someone else’s home.

5 . Don’t forget the garden

Over the cold winter months your garden is sure to have been neglected. However now that the weather is warming up don’t forget to give it a little TLC.

Paint your fences, mow the lawn, and plant some nice flowers to make your house more appealing. Quick fixes can make the biggest difference when trying to leave a good impression with potential buyers.
